Hiking buddies and more: highlights from a week in Hiking buddies and more: highlights from a week in the life at our nature based outdoor preschool
Traditions and rituals help create culture. Gather Traditions and rituals help create culture. Gathering at stump circle to welcome new friends and sing songs has long been a tradition at ERS that builds our sense of community. Sometimes new traditions establish themselves organically, like introducing a real campfire built by our own 4 and 5 year olds who have spent a lot of time learning about fire safety and what it takes to build a proper campfire. The whole school participated in decorating the sticks that form our fire circle. This creates a safe boundary that everyone must stay behind. We had a practice campfire the week before, to help establish the rules. I think everyone would agree that this week’s first real campfire, although small, was very special and something we would like to do many more times this winter. Here’s to new traditions in the making. #outdoorpreschool #naturebasedlearning #lifeskills #getoutside #getoutdoors #campfire #traditionsandrituals #schoolculture #emergentcurriculum

Since our usual communal family style meal is out Since our usual communal family style meal is out of the question this year, we have been working toward a special plan for next week and these sticks, collected and painted by the children will be an important part of that plan. Any guesses? Stay tuned. May turn out to be a new tradition in the making.

The Lantern Walk is always a highlight of the school year for staff and families alike. Even with modifications for pandemic safety in place, this year’s Lantern Walk didn’t disappoint.

Grateful for my wonderful job and the opportunity Grateful for my wonderful job and the opportunity to stand in for one of our teachers this morning for a few hours in the woods with our Acorns (2-3 year olds). These kids are true adventurers and there’s no better place than the woods for them to learn this about themselves. The forest provides endless opportunities for physical challenges that no manufactured playground can rival, along with the inspiration for curious inquiry and playful imagination at every turn. I witnessed all of the above in abundance this morning.#forestschool #getoutside #getoutdoors #naturebasedpreschool #littlehikers #wolftrapnationalpark #kidsinnature #experientiallearning #earlychildhoodeducation

They tinted clear yogurt jars by coating the insides with Mod Podge mixed with food coloring. Then they added handles and decorations with beads, pipe cleaners and sculpting wire. The were incredibly focused as they worked with this new medium, and they were very satisfied with the results. #lanternwalk #mixedmediaart #3dart #processart #reggioinspired #finemotorskills #preschoolart #earlychildhoodeducation
“I’m jumping in the rain!” Puddle jumping wa “I’m jumping in the rain!” Puddle jumping was definitely high on the list of preferred activities today, along with muddy sand play, shelter building, and lots of high energy and squealing. The older Children kept warm with lots of “work”, moving large sticks to bolster their huge tepee, hauling pails of water and creating deep channels in the sand...I am guessing there are lots of soundly sleeping children and teachers tonight and busy parents doing lots of laundry. 😬 At ERS, a backpack full of wet sandy clothes is directly proportionate to the amount of fun (and experiential learning) had that day. #naturebasedpreschool #naturebasedlearning #getoutside #getoutdoors #learningoutside #forestschool #earlychildhoodeducation #rainyday #puddlejumping #nosuchthingasbadweather
